Strengthening Social Management during Exploration

December 18, 2024 by Juliana Marquez

Exploration activities often represent a company’s first interaction with surrounding communities. Recognizing the important role that geologists have in community engagement, Lundin Foundation partnered with Lundin Mining to host “Community Relations in the Exploration Phase” , an interactive capacity building program, in Santiago, Chile in early December.

This three-day workshop brought together leaders from Lundin Mining’s site Exploration and Social Performance teams, alongside representatives from other Lundin companies in the region. The workshop marked the culmination of a two-month online training program facilitated by the University of Queensland’s Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) and the Sustainable Minerals Institute – International Centre of Excellence (SMI-ICE-Chile).

Key topics covered during the workshop included:

  • Understanding territories of influence and designing community profile
  • Developing meaningful community engagement strategies
  • Exploring critical aspects such as indigenous communities, local content, and water management

Through discussions and collaborative group activities, participants exchanged insights, applied their learnings to real-world scenarios, and worked together to develop practical solutions related to their fieldwork challenges.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants for their dedication and contributions to this impactful initiative. Together, we are advancing sustainable practices and fostering stronger connections within the communities in which we operate.
