Exploration activities often represent a company’s first interaction with surrounding communities. Recognizing the important role that geologists have in community engagement, Lundin Foundation partnered with Lundin Mining to host “Community Relations in the Exploration Phase” , an interactive capacity building program, in Santiago, Chile in early December.
This three-day workshop brought together leaders from Lundin Mining’s site Exploration and Social Performance teams, alongside representatives from other Lundin companies in the region. The workshop marked the culmination of a two-month online training program facilitated by the University of Queensland’s Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) and the Sustainable Minerals Institute – International Centre of Excellence (SMI-ICE-Chile).
Key topics covered during the workshop included:
- Understanding territories of influence and designing community profile
- Developing meaningful community engagement strategies
- Exploring critical aspects such as indigenous communities, local content, and water management
Through discussions and collaborative group activities, participants exchanged insights, applied their learnings to real-world scenarios, and worked together to develop practical solutions related to their fieldwork challenges.
